An antique drinking glass with exceptional engraving of three tulips on the bell bowl. The stem features an inverted baluster knop with trapped air tear. Dutch soda metal. Height 5 3/4 inches, bowl diameter 2 1/4 inches, folded foot diameter 2 3/4 inches.

As mentioned for other similar items on the site, this type ware is often mistakenly referred to as Leeds and featheredge. In reality, many factories other than Leeds made items of this nature, and the type edge here is more properly called a molded edge. This particular plate was made by Riley, and is indicated as such with an impressed mark on the back. Being able to identify the maker does increase the value to some extent...

A nicely executed Dutch double series opaque twist drinking glass, made of soda metal, with elegant form. A bell bowl with a stem with a pair of solid multi-ply spiral bands outside of two heavy spiral threads. 6 1/2 inches tall, with a bowl diameter of 2 1/2 inches and a foot diameter of 2 15/16 inches.

A fine little dish in what is often called Leeds feather edge. Accurately speaking, this is not a true Leeds feather edge piece, but is an English pearlware pickle leaf dish with blue edge decoration. This is an unusual, wonderful, and beautifully done folk art example of a tinsel or foil painting. The vast majority of tinsel paintings are of flowers. This rarity depicts a bluebird hovering over a basket filled with pears, a melon, and apples. A cluster of cherries, and bunches of grapes and foliage surround the basket. Colors are deep and very vibrant, and include blues, purple, brown, various shades of yellow and green, white, reds, and others...

A beautiful and rare Chelsea Red Anchor plate distinguished by both its raised strawberry and leaf decorations around the gently undulating border, and the central bird. Plates with such a border are known, but not common. A rare set of 6 tall English air twist drinking glasses featuring highly uncommon spiral fluted, narrow flared trumpet bowls above multiple-spiral air twist stems. The form itself is incredibly uncommon, as is finding any true set of 18th century glasses in superb condition.

An antique wine glass of lead composition. This drinking glass has a drawn trumpet bowl and a stem with a trapped tear. The bowl has diamond point engraving with the names Harlord Wright and Frances Chat, followed by the Latin saying flammae felices quas mutuus exitat ardor. Loosely translated, this means How fortunate are those for whom the flames of love burn without change, a charming sentiment for what is a marriage or anniversary glass. A beautiful and uncommonly small 18th century glass mug, English, possibly a wine mug. Applied trailing at the top and center, with an applied grooved handle. Finely engraved with the name "Clarence Arthur." Polished pontil.

This is a very fine Dr. Wall Worcester sparrow beak cream jug, dating from the 1765-1768 period. The pattern features brightly painted pomegranates in various stages of development. There is only one other example of this pattern recorded: a coffee cup that was theorized to have been made as a replacement for a Chinese teaset, and was offered in one of the Zorensky sales...

A spectacular and huge English baluster goblet with a mushroom knop. The thistle-shaped bowl, with solid base, sits atop a short section over a wide (2 1/4 inches) mushroom knop with a tear extending into a basal ball knop above a folded foot.

The height of this beautiful and rare example is 6 1/2", with a bowl diameter of 2 11/16" and a foot diameter of 2 13/16".

An elaborate large German wine goblet, the round funnel bowl cut and etched with two winged figures clasping hands over an orb. The inscription on the reverse of the glass reads, in Old German: "unser freundschaft sol bestehn bis wir mit der welt vergehn", which translates to "our friendship shall remain until we leave this world". The beautifully cut stem is of the teared inverted baluster type. Folded foot with rough snapped pontil.

A wonderful Bow porcelain factory tea bowl painted in the "Jumping Boy" pattern. Although this pattern is occasionally found on Chaffers porcelain, and is not common, it appears to occur even much less frequently on Bow porcelain pieces. The potting is extremely thin and light. The painting, done in shades of dark and lighter blues, is extremely well done, and features a seated Oriental woman holding a sprig of flowers. A beautiful Newcastle Light Baluster wine glass. Superbly Dutch engraved, as the best of these are, with the coat of arms of the province of Holland, the pointed round funnel bowl is on a stem with a teared baluster knop above a central annulated knop above a teared inverted baluster knop. Folded conical foot with a rough, snapped pontil.

A very rare German mixed color twist of soda glass. Bell bowl with a solid base over a stem containing a white opaque twist multi-ply corkscrew surrounding a ruby thread, the whole with an entwined single air thread. 6 1/8 inches tall, 2 3/8 inch bowl diameter, 2 3/4 inch foot diameter.

Mixed twist glasses are as rare as color twist glasses, and the combination of both is an extremely uncommon and desirable construction.

A single series opaque twist drinking glass with an extremely gutsy presence. Single series glasses are rarer than double series opaque twists glasses, and this one, with its round funnel bowl, and opaque twist comprised of a multi-ply outlined corkscrew is a very strong example, with a large foot. 6 inches tall, 2 5/16 inch bowl diameter, 3 1/16 inch foot diameter.

From the latter half of the 19th century, this beautifully proportioned iron vane graced the spire of the United Baptist Church in Ellsworth, Maine. In 1933, a major fire swept through the town, burning many of the buildings, including the church. When the church was finally rebuilt, the council wanted a more modern look, and stored the vane in the basement, where it remained for the next 70 years or so. The most common type of air twist found in mid-18th century English glasses is the multiple spiral air twist (MSAT). Double series air twists are occasionally found, but triple series twists are incredibly rare, with very few still in existence. This particular example has an ogee bowl leading into a stem with a central air core surrounded by a two ply heavy thread which is in turn surrounded by a three ply heavy thread. A wonderful American folk art mourning portrait painting of a young child, done by Horace Bundy. Although unsigned by him, virtually all the characteristics that indicate such an attribution are present. In addition, an old label from an antiques dealer is on the back, along with a pencilled inscription about Bundy on the backing board.

The group of small porcelain items known as "toys" is composed of scent bottles, bonbonnieres, etuis, and seals. These were produced from the early years of Chelsea through to the Chelsea-Derby period. (The most comprehensive work on these items is "The Chelsea Porcelain Toys", by G.E. Bryant, published in 1925.)

This is a wonderful pair of Derby putti disguised as flower sellers, dating from the 1770 period. The figures are mirror images of each other, as true pairs should be. Each putti has a basket of flowers over one arm, while a single flower is held in the hand of the other arm. The height is 5 1/2", considerably larger than the usual putti. The bottoms display the patch marks typical of Derby during this period of manufacture.

An extremely rare firing glass of drawn trumpet form. The bowl is engraved "The Friendly Hunt". The condition is excellent, with no chips, cracks, restoration or other problems. Lead glass with good color, striations, and tool marks. The height is 3 1/2", with a bowl diameter of 2 1/8" and a foot diameter of 2 1/4".

The Victoria and Albert Museum has a virtually identical piece, their catalog number C.2571925, and described the engraving as most likely referencing a Jacobite hunting club.

A single series air twist (SSAT) stem, much less common than the normal multiple spiral air twist (MSAT); a pleasing glass with a trumpet bowl; 7" tall, 3.3" diameter foot, 3.1" diameter bowl

This is a small and charming child's gameboard, measuring 13 3/4" long by 10 3/4" wide by 3/4" thick. It was found in Vermont, and most likely originated there. It is made of maple, with bread-boarded ends, affixed with square nails. The dry paint surface, with its red and black checkerboard, outlined with green stripes, is in superb condition, with no overpainting or areas of loss. A wine glass rinser, rare because of the deep and beautiful red color. Wine rinsers or wine washers were used to cool or rinse wine glasses between courses of meals. Red was, by far, the least common color of glass in this period because of the expense in making since gold had to be added to the molten metal to achieve the color. This is a wonderful example in excellent condition. The height is 3 3/4 inches and the diameter is 4 5/16 inches. Polished pontil.

An absolutely wonderful and highly amusing engraved baluster glass, actually a goblet, of soda metal. The round funnel bowl, which has a beaded base, is engraved with two rabbits carrying a dog in a sedan chair. The reverse side of the bowl says, in Old German, "Man Mus Einen Seinen Gute & Thun", which roughly translates as "You have to do good things for your enemies." Clearly the rabbits are following that advice so as to not be chased or eaten by the dog.

This is an extremely fine example of a Lowestoft tea canister, made in the 1775 - 1780 period. It is of rectangular form with sloped shoulders and a molded ridge following the outline of the sloping portion. The printed design features flowers and insects. An open crescent mark is on the underneath.

A beautiful Bohemian wine glass with panelled sides, a bowl wonderfully engraved with a woman seated in a garden, a facet cut stem, and elongated rondels cut into the folded foot; 5 7/8" tall, 2 1/2" diameter bowl, 2 7/8" diameter foot

An elegant and beautiful Derby porcelain figure of "Flora," from the "Antique Seasons" set. Flora (or Spring)stands on a tall plinth, is wearing a diadem of flowers, has gathered her robe in her left hand, and is offering a wreath with her right. The Antique Seasons set was made in 1771, and each has the model number "5" incised in the base. It is described in Peter Bradshaw's book "Derby Porcelain Figures 1750-1848" as being exceedingly rare.
