This is a superbly rendered watercolor on paper attributed to Henry Walton. The name of the sitter, John Andrew Jenny, is written in pencil at the top of the painting, in penmanship not unlike Walton's.

Mr. Jenny is a nice-looking young man wearing a black coat, with highlights in gum arabic. The style of the coat and the cravat place this portrait in the 1841-1844 time period. This is consistent with Walton's development as an artist, when he began to paint the faces of his subjects with modeling and shading, as opposed to his earlier style of faces which had round eyes, full cheeks, cupid-bow lips, and lack of much contour. Here the features are finely drawn, with all facial aspects beautifully executed with appropriate depth and shadowing.

The piece is 3 3/8 inches by 2 7/8 inches sight size. The tiger maple frame, which is period and might be original, is 7 1/2 inches by 6 3/4 inches. The painting is in excellent condition, with no tears or restoration, and only some slight, even toning, which is to be expected.

This would be a wonderful display piece or addition to any collection of American folk art.
