A rare and signed portrait miniature by Charles Byrne. Done in an almost impressionistic style, the sitter is a blue-eyed woman simply presented in a white gown with fur trimming along the top edge. She is posed against a gauzy white background with blue tints to complement her eyes.

The miniature has a sight size of 2 1/2" by 2" and is in excellent condition. The backing paper of the painting has the following artist and sitter identifications: "Painted by / Ch Byrne / 1801 / Mary Lamborn / wife of / James Cock. Shown in a later frame.

BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION: Charles Byrne (1757 - c 1810) was born in Dublin and became a pupil, assistant, and interpreter for Sampson Towgood Roche, a deaf mute Irish miniaturist. Byrne then went into practice for himself, and worked briefly in London, exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1801. He lapsed into insanity some years before his death around 1810. He never had a large body of work, and few, especially signed examples, seem to have survived.
