A beautiful Chelsea Porcelain Factory coffee cup and saucer in the highly uncommon and sought after spiral molded scolopendrium pattern form. Specifically, the cup has an iron-red undulating rim , and a spiral molded tapering body. The handle is of a notched scroll type with a raised central ridge, clearly influenced by Nicholas Sprimont (the first director of the Chelsea factory) and his prior experience as a silversmith. The body of the cup is fulsomely decorated with a variety of blooming flowers. Emanating from the base are raised leaves in green, with the central vein in puce. The saucer is also spiral molded with the top decorated in flowers and the underneath with raised leaves in green and puce.

The bottoms of both pieces have the expected stilt marks and red anchor, along with a label showing that these were part of the well-known Shaw collection. I was told that there had been, at one time, a tiny flea bite on the cup rim and one on the saucer rim. These were professionally and invisibly restored and do not show in normal light or under uv light. Aside from those possible quibbles both pieces are in superb condition, with bright pristine colors, and no cracks, chips, or other issues. The cup is 2 5/8" in height and 2 5/8" in diameter, with the saucer having a 5" diameter.
