A charming watercolor on paper of a woman, identified on the reverse as "Maggie", is in a black dress with white lace collar and cap. She is seen mending a lace collar while seated at a work table with a fringed red cloth covering it. Another piece of material, a book, and a paint decorated burlwood sewing box rest on the table. The painting provides a nice insight into 19th century domestic life.

The painting itself is in excellent condition, with lightly toned paper, good color with no losses, and no creases or tears. The fine frame is gilded over gesso, and is in very good condition with small losses at the tips of the left corners. Sight size is 6 1/2" by 5", and the overall framed size is 10" by 8 1/2". The frame was made by Thomas McPherson of Dumfries, Scotland, and retains his label on the reverse.
