A fine lead antique wine glass, being a true Jacobite multiple spiral air twist (MSAT) glass engraved by Engraver B in Seddon's book. The air twist is very tight and elegantly fashioned. The round funnel bowl has a 6 petal rose, and a closed rose bud to its right. On the reverse of the glass is an oak leaf, an important Jacobite symbol which represents the Boscobel Oak, the tree that Charles II hid in. Charles II was the predecessor king to James I, the father of James II, father to James Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender, who was, in turn, the father of Bonnie Prince Charles, the Young Pretender.

It is important to note that Jacobite glasses with a single bud, as this one is, are about twice as rare as those with two buds. Over the years there have been various interpretations of these symbols, and even now it can be argued that the rose represents either the Crown of England or James, the Old Pretender. An open bud can represent The Old Pretender, or Prince Charles, or Prince Henry, while a closed bud can represent the Old Pretender, or Prince Charles.

Perfect condition. Conical foot with rough, snapped pontil. 6 inches tall, 2 1/8 inch bowl diameter, 2 3/4 inch foot diameter.
