Signed Portrait Miniature of Woman Knitting c1820
Please refer to our stock # a1651 when inquiring.
A beautifully rendered portrait done in watercolor on organic material. The sitter is Jeanne Marie Schrillier (?), an attractive woman attired in a greenish dress, with a lace cap with a green ribbon, the lace tied in a neat bow at her throat. However, there is so much more depicted in this work of art: the multi-colored draping on the chair she is sitting on, the glass vase of flowers atop a work table that also has her knitting bag, the item she is knitting, all backed with the painted paneled walls of the room. It is quite uncommon that this much external detailing is found in miniature portraits.
The painting is signed on the backing paper and appears to say that it was done in Paris in 1820, with the last name of the artist being the same as that of the sitter. Condition is excellent, with a very small and tight filled crack at the top far right. Displayed in a later metal frame measuring 4" by 4 3/4".
