A nicely done watercolor, on natural organic material, miniature painting by William Massey Stroud Doyle, signed and dated "1814" center left. The sitter is wearing a black coat, red-striped yellow vest, and white shirt. E. Grosvenor Paine provenance.

The painting is is excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, bowing, or other problems. The black lacquered frame does have crackling. The sight size is 2 5/8" by 2 1/8", and the framed size is 4 1/2" by 3 7/8".

NOTE: Doyle (1769 - 1828) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, working from there the remainder of his life. He became noted for portraits in miniature, pastel, and crayon, as well as silhouettes and illustrations for books.

In 1796, he was first listed in the Boston Directory as a paper stainer, and then in 1803 was listed as a painter of miniatures. At that time, he joined with Daniel Bowen in the proprietorship of the Columbian Museum, which exhibited art, wax figures, and natural history specimens. He also was in partnership with Henry Williams during the 1807 - 1815 period.
