One of the finest miniature paintings done by William Massey Stroud Doyle, showing a young man in a black jacket, white shirt and tie with a stickpin. The finely limned gentleman is shown against a white cloud-filled blue sky. Signed "Doyle 1822" at the lower right.
Not only is the painting itself beautiful, but the original case is also very fine, containing a lock of hair in the glazed rear aperture. Condition of the mini is excellent, with no cracks, chips, or restoration. The case is also without issues.
The painting is quite large, with a sight size of 3 3/16" by 2 11/16", and the case size is 3 5/16" by 2 13/16".
NOTE: Doyle (1769 - 1828) was born in Boston, Massachusetts, working from there the remainder of his life. He became noted for portraits in miniature, pastel, and crayon, as well as silhouettes and illustrations for books.
In 1796, he was first listed in the Boston Directory as a paper stainer, and then in 1803 was listed as a painter of miniatures. At that time, he joined with Daniel Bowen in the proprietorship of the Columbian Museum, which exhibited art, wax figures, and natural history specimens. He also was in partnership with Henry Williams during the 1807 - 1815 period.
